The system of green areas  has had a strong revival in recent years through the existence of plans, programs and projects aimed at promoting and creating new parks, at the revitalization of the existing ones, within the logic of a sustainable urban development.

A proper planning and a consistent maintenance of the urban green areas allows to improve the aesthetic and ornamental value of the city. Moreover, it acquires an important social function since it enables the creation of leisure and educational spaces, walks and spaces where it is possible to practice sports.

After the earthquake of1980, the local Administration adopted a new policy to protect the territory and the nature. The policy was realized through urbanistic measures, at the same time, the green spaces were expanded; new parks were created and the existing ones were retrained. At the moment the city has 53 parks and gardens, and many more green areas are going to be opened.
