On Friday 17 April, at the Sea Museum of Naples, via di Pozzuoli 5 (Bagnoli), at 9.00 am, had been inaugurated the photo-documentary exhibition "From Scugnizzi to sailors boys. The experience of the Kindergarten Ship Caracciolo", organized by Antonio Mussari and M.Antonietta Selvaggio.
The exhibition, which will have ended by May 31th, reconstructs the original educational experiment that happened between 1913 and 1928, drawing the attention of many scholars and specialists from all the world.
The pedagogical method created by Giulia Civita Franceschi, headmistress of the Kindergarten-ship, saved over 750 scugnizzi from street life, giving them a healthy and upstanding life.
The commemoration of this extraordinary experience belongs to a largest project organized by the Sea Museum, called "To recall the seafaring life of Naples", main subject of the National Conference which took place on April 17th at the museum itself.
Scholars of many Universities and research centres, participate in the event with their own contribution about the importance of the cultural heritage of sea and its jobs, the importance of sea in the environmental history, maritime populations, Mediterranean identity torn between meetings and conflicts and the institution of Kindergarten ships in Italy harking back to the English training ships.

The alderman Raffa took part in the work, bringing Mayor Rosa Iervolino Russo's greetings, issued these statements:
"In the first decades of the last century, the ship Caracciolo welcomed about 750 orphans and guttersnipes,giving them the chance of improving their life becoming sailors or well-appreciated technicians. I think it's laudable that the Sea Museum, with support of the Campania Region, Naples City hall and Province, has decided to dedicate a photographic exhibition to that wonderful experience which had been led by a brave woman, Giulia Civita Franceschi.
I believe that, nowadays,it needs recovering young people at risk, harking back to that experience,making them rediscover old traditional jobs.
On this topic, in collaboration with the alderman of the Public Education Gioia Rispoli, we are organizing a training and careers guidance in the handicraft, which will allow 80 Secondary and High School's students to keep in touch with small business.
It's just a drop in the bucket, of course, but it can be considered the beginning of recovery and revaluation of the handicraft, a process we are getting off the ground in many places of our city; for example, The Historical City Centre will become an out and out Place of the sacred and the ceremony. This will be possible thanks to the positive experiences of Borgo Orfici and San Gregorio Armeno, places which have drawn the attention of many specialists in these last months.
I remember Aldo Bonomi, editorialist and scholar of the local development, who, on the easter Day, published in the newspaper "Il sole 24 0re", an article about Naples, in general terms, and Borgo Orefici,in particular.
