How to access the service

What to do when you find something

If anyone finds an object and they don't know who the owner is they should hand it in to the Lost Property Office in Via G.B. Marino 7 bis, indicating where and how the object was found. A receipt is issued to the finder. If the object is perishable the Office can sell it.

The office looks after the item and, in the meantime, informs the public that it has been handed in through publishing the information in the Pretorio register and does what it can to trace the rightful owner. If the owner is found, he or she can go to the Lost Property Office to reclaim their property on production of a valid identity document and a copy of the statement made to the police when they reported their loss (if relevant). We would like to remind people that in the case of lost documents it is compulsory to report the loss to the police.

Information about lost property is published monthly.

what to do

When you lose something

The owner of any item which has been handed in to the Lost Property Office needs to prove that the item is the one he/she lost and will be asked to pay the equivalent of 10% of the value of the lost item in cash (5% is given to the person who handed the item in as a reward and the other 5% goes to the Council for holding the item in safe keeping). The value of the item is established by a special commission.

Returning to finder

A year after information regarding any item found has been published for the second time in the Pretorio register, the finder has the right to claim the item. The finder will be invited to go along to the Lost Property Office with a valid identity document and asked to pay, in cash, a sum equivalent to 5% of the value of the item, to cover the costs to the Council of looking after the item.

note
