Grounds for the award: "While he was in a trench he was attacked by overpowering forces coming from both the front and the back, but he managed to resist with admirable strength and boldness.
Informed that most of the unit was retiring, he ordered his platoon to surround him, thus saying: "This is our place. Draw close to your lieutenant; here we are to stand up for our regiment!". He died among his soldiers".
