Commemorative medals

A simple round of metal that becomes an instrument of communication and an artistic product. A celebrative and propaganda function expressed in metal by artistic inventions which adapt the explicit message to the inspiration of the engraver. From the portrait-medal (15th century) invnted by Pisanello to its modern forms, that round of metal - at times intrinsically precious because it is gold or silver - it has taken on, in its best and original interpretations, the form of a real work of art.

These pages give an account of some of the coinages the City has produced in memory of the personages and events of history.
