As at the court of Frederick II

Series of meetings 2013-2014

"The initiative was born because we considered the fact that in Naples the discourses on science are not well developed, neither they are so common.

There are places where it ispossible to talk about science.
We do not have any type of celebration in which it is possible to deal with science, where it is possibleto talk about or tell about scientific events.

There are just a few opportunities for citizens to understand, as for instance, the reason why they can use their mobile phones.

In other words, we thought about curious people, those who want to discover, know, see what there is around them.
At this point a question is necessary: what is missing? the supply or the demand?

Is it possible to talk about scientific issues with a broad audience?
Or only experts should deal with them? [...] What we also wondered is if a prestigious university that has 800 years of history can deal with these issues.

We had no doubts.

Our intention is not to make a proper scientific dissemination, as it happens on televisions and magazines.

Our idea is to propose appealing topics to a wide audience.
These topics should be developed with scientific methods, with the help of scholars that can deal with this topic using a current language, making them clear and without boring.

Our aim is to develop a theme investigating and reasoning, so that the audience can be helped by the scientist. Reasoning and investigating is scientist's work. The rest is technique, mastery of the instruments, it is what should remain in scientist's lab. We hope that our initiative will become a national event. "

Frederick II's
Frederick II, (1194 - 1250) king of Sicily, duke of Swabia, German king, and Holy Roman emperor. A Hohenstaufen and grandson of Frederick I Barbarossa, he pursued his dynasty's imperial policies against the papacy and the Italian city states; and he also joined in the Sixth Crusade, conquering several areas of the Holy Land and crowning himself king of Jerusalem.
He created a civil service for which candidates were trained at the first European state university, in Naples, which he himself founded in 1224.
