From Piazza Mercato to Corso Umberto I (called Rettifilo)

Piazza Mercato, detail.

Our itinerary starts from Via S. Giovanni a Mare where, since the 12th century, annexed to a bailiwick of the Order of St. John, was erected the Church dedicated to the Baptist.

Passing under the arch of the "Clock", we reach the Church of Sant'Eligio Maggiore, with its wonderful cuspidated portal.

Piazza Mercato, completely transformed in the XIX century with the Church of Santa Croce al Mercato, leads to Piazza Santa Maria del Carmine where the Basilica and the Monastic Complex of Santa Maria del Carmine Maggiore rise.

Through Corso Garibaldi we reach Piazza Nolana where, in front of the famous and homonymous "Porta", commissioned by Ferrante of Aragon, the 17th century Church of Saints Cosma and Damiano is located, completely remade in 1852 further to the widening of Corso Garibaldi.

At the beginning of Corso Umberto I, towards Piazza Nicola Amore, there is the side entrance of the Monumental Church of St. Pietro ad Aram.
