Chapel of San Giovanni dei Pappacoda

Façade of the chapel

The Chapel was commisioned by The Great Seneschal of King Ladislao of Durazzo, Artusio Pappacoda, in 1415. It is rectangular shaped with a single nave.

On the side walls there are the late 15th-century sepulchres of Angelo and Sigismondo Pappacoda, attributed to Girolamo Santacroce. The front elevation has a rich marble portal sculpted in elaborate late Gothic style by the Abbot Antonio Baboccio da Piperno.

Following up the restoration carried out by Giuseppe Pappacoda in 1772, the ancient frescoes were destroyed. The bell tower is an example of the transition from Gothic to Renaissance art . It has double lancet windows with round arches with slender spiral columns, gracefully decorated, in contrast with the wide dosserets.
