St. Gennaro Door

St. Gennaro Door

[La Porta S. Gennaro (the Door of St. Gennaro)] was first behind the Chiesa del Gesù [the nearby Church del Gesù delle Monache] and in this place it was relocated from D. Pietro di Toledo. It is said of St. Gennaro, or because it goes out to go to the church of S. Gennaro to the Catacombs, or because it was not far from the church of S. Gennaro Spogliamorti.

Be seen inside the statue of St. Gaetano put there as votive offering in the time of the plague in 1656. Outside, there is a nice fresco by Mattia Preti, the only remains of the many he made about the ports of Naples, when with the art he redeemed his life.

He painted the plague of Naples, and his work was so pleased that the city gave him a gift of 300 ducats. This beautiful memory could be vanish. The benedictory little statue represents St. Gennaro with the motto "Divo Januario - apotropaco - sospes Neapolis".
