St. Maria of the Virgins

St. Maria of the Virgins

In 1326 people of Rione di Porta San Gennaro erected in this place an hospital and a church named Santa Maria del Borgo dei Vergini... the Cardinal Innico Caracciolo gave the House and the Church to the Padri della Missione [the Congregation of the Mission]... These fathers, remaining the old church outside the monastery to use it as parish, afterwards built another an internal church in elliptical shape with a very beautiful drawing of Vanvitelli, finished in 1788.

On the altar is the painting of St. Vincenzo de' Paoli in gloria (in the glory) by Francesco la Mura; in the big chapels there are the Sacra Famiglia (Holy Family) and Santa Francesca Fremiot with St. Vincenzo de' Paoli by Saverino Galante (1750), in the chapels there are the death of St. Giuseppe, the Crucifix, St. Michele and St. Giovanni Nepomuceno all of unknown brush of the past century, the conversion of San Paolo and the Battista are by Giovanni Sarnelli.

On the door of the parish of Santa Maria dei Vergini there is a marble statue carved by Francesco Liberti and Giuseppe Pirotti in 1858. There is one nave, on the high altar there is the ancient portrait of the Virgin Mary; the paintings in chapels date back to the seventeenth century and have no merit.

[Inside the church is preserved the baptismal font where he was baptized St. Alfonso Maria de' Liguori].
