May of Monuments 2014

20th Edition as part of the Universal Forum of Cultures Naples-May, 1st-June, 30th

The event, that represents an important moment of cultural enrichment for citizens and tourists, takes on a special meaning this year reaching its 20th edition and being the first major event organized and funded by the Universal Forum of Cultures Naples. "The May" traces the broader theme of "Knowledge", one of the five main themes of the event bearing the Universal Forum of Cultures.
The fill rouge "Stories and Legends of Naples", based on Giordano Bruno's text, lends itself particularly to highlight the most authentic meaning of the initiative throug, an exploration of the historical experience of Naples, the collective imagination of the city ​​and its historical European and Mediterranean roots.

The aim of the Administration is not only to draw the attention of citizens and the tourists to the beauty of the place and of the "monuments", nut also to underline the fact that these monuments represent.
May of Monuments 2014, represents a great opportunity to give visibility to the Forum of Cultures and its values as well. For this reason, there are new ways to think about the global world through the genius loci of Naples, to make effectual vocation of the city to dialogue, understanding of different cultural experimentation that knows how to be both passionate and joyful.

The 20th edition of May of Monuments will take place from May, 1st to June, 1st, the events of the Forum of Cultures will continue till June, 30th.
The program is structured in a special section starring the Italian Institute for Historical Studies, the National Library "Vittorio Emanuele III", the Neapolitan Society of country's history, the Pontaniana Pontaniana, the National Society of Sciences and Letters arts, the Italian Institute for Philosophical Studies, Naples Prize Foundation, the Zoological Station "Anton Dohrn" to witness the deep bond with the teaching, the life and work of Benedetto Croce offering the contribution of the high traditions and heritages that guard.
There will also be eight artistic/ iterary and tourist/cultural itineraries, inspired by Croce's work and that will take place during the weekends of May.
Another feature is the adoption program carried out by the Special Foundation Naples 99 with his project "The school adopts a monument".
Space is also dedicated to the many events that spontaneously cultural operators offering the city every year and preciously greatly enriching the institutional program. The event will also take place in the neighboring towns such as Castellammare di Stabia and Boscoreale, that developed thier own cultural activities.


A characteristic element for the entire will be the promotional campaign made by the students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. For the occasion, the students developed a new graphic and audiovisual projects.The May of Monument, organized with the controbution of the Department for Culture and Toruism of the City of Naples, has also the support of the Foundation and the Universal Forum of Cultures, of numerous associations, cultural operators, students and teachers, prestigious cultural institutions, together mobilized to present to the world, once again, the true image of a beautiful city not only a creative and intelligent, but justly proud and proud of a great past and conscious of being a resource for Italy, for Europe, for the World.
  Because of bad weather, the first meeting of Veduta Leopardi (Leopardi View), scheduled for Thursday May 15th, was postponed to Thursday May 22nd. The reading, will take place on the first flight of the San Pasquale Stairs, starting at 6pm. The reading will be in the open air, there will be no scenography, for this reason free movement along the stairs is guarated.
It will be possible, at the first appointment of the manifestation, to listen to the Infinito (Infinite) by Leopardi in Neapolitan or in Swahili. The avent is curated by Futura da Costanzo Ioni Association and it will take place on May, 22nd at San pasquale Stairs.   Participation of poets Arianna Pastena, Roberto Gaudioso, Giovanni Ibello, Marina Mineo, Mimmo Grasso, Ciro Tremolaterra, Costantino Sgamato, Raffaele Rizzo, musical performances by Francesco Cuomo, Neapolitan classical texts chosen by Ernesto Nocera, historical notes by Antonio Salzano.
