Church of San Giovanni a Mare

Capital

The Church of San Giovanni a Mare is a testimony of the Romanesque architecture in Naples. It was realised in the XII century, annexed to a bailiwick of the Order of St John dedicated to the Baptist.

Widened and rehandled in 1336 and in the XV century, it preserves a Romanesque structure. Further to renovations , the Church was included in new buildings.

Today the entry, from Via San Giovanni a Mare, is some meters below the road level. Outside, a copy of an Hellenic female head has recently been situated. Its original is on the second landing of Palazzo S. Giacomo, known as "Donna Marianna à cap' e Napule" ("Mrs Marianne, the head of Naples").
