Pio Monte della Misericordia

foreground of the Caravaggio's painting with side candelabrums
Interior, Caravaggio, "Seven Works of Mercy"

This charitable institution was founded in 1601 by Neapolitan aristocrats wishing to assist the sick and outcasts of every kind. In 1604 the architect G.G. Di Conforto built its seat as well as the Church of "Opera Pia" .

In order to face the increasing work in which the institution was engaged, the museum complex was built beginning from 1658 on a plan by F. Picchiatti.
The façade of the present-day construction is articulated in three orders with a five-arcade portico which house the sculptures by Andrea Falcone. The church has an octagonal plan with six chapels and the main altar.

The apse area houses the celebrated painting by Caravaggio, "The Seven Works of Mercy"; over the side altars : from the right "Saint Paolino" by Giovanni Bernardino Azzolino; "Christ in the house of Mary and Martha" by Fabrizio Santafede; "The good samaritan" by Giovanni Vincenzo Forli; "St Peter raises Tabitha" by Santafede; "Christ's deposition" by Luca Giordano; "St Peter liberated from prison" by Battistello Caracciolo.
The picture gallery on the first floor of the museum complex is also excellent.
